Belts and chains both throw liquids forward on motorcycles.
Best reason to leave it on is that if it is removed the next time you ride in the rain you will come home with a streak of mud and water down the back of your jacket - liquids thrown off by the belt.
There was this awful date I had about a million years ago - she wore a brand new sweater to come for a bike ride on my Triumph and on which I had just throughly lubricated the chain. Say no more!
As I remember it she was a pretty girl too - sigh
